  • Our Breeding Philosophy

We have built a herd of outstanding brood cows by only saving heifers from cows that possess the following traits:

    Calve every year
  • Calving interval no more than 410 days
  • Above herd average weaning weight
  • Good udders
  • Good feet and legs
  • Moderate size

By using this selection criteria, which emphasizes maternal characteristics, our cows are not the largest of our breed but are extremely efficient. If we had to define our herd goals in two words they would be "Maternal Efficiency". We want 1000-1200# cows that wean 600-700# calves. We retain young bulls for sale and our own use that come from such cows. This past year we saved two bulls for future use. The first had an adjusted 205 day weaning weight of 698# from a dam that weighed 1169#. The second was 688# from a 1200# dam. Two others that were "steered" were 639# from a 1071# cow and a 655# from a 1050# cow. The average of these four calves was 60% of the cow's weight. It's performance like this that gave us our slogan..."We don't want the biggest cows....We want the most efficient".
